“Consider yourself dethroned, Queen Bee.”
When last seen, New York teen socialite Blair Waldorf was feeling the sting of that sentence. Played by Leighton Meester, she’s in the eye of the gossip storm as the CW drama series “Gossip Girl” resumes its first year with new episodes Monday.
Blair has been ousted from her catty clique by Jenny (Taylor Momsen), sister of Dan (Penn Badgley), the current beau of Blair’s former best friend Serena (Blake Lively). It’s hardly Blair’s only problem: Her days-apart intimacy with both Chuck and Nate (Ed Westwick, Chace Crawford) left her with a pregnancy scare she’s still rattled by. With Serena’s support, she has decided not to flee from her many detractors.
“She was kind of on the precipice of a mental breakdown,” Meester says. “She was taken down a few notches by the other girls, and pretty much everything that could go wrong just blew up in her face. It was an interesting place to leave her. She has gone through so much with friends and men and school and her parents, I think she needs a bit of reflection.”
Quiet moments may be scarce for Blair, though, thanks also to heard-but-not-seen Gossip Girl (played vocally by “Veronica Mars” alumna Kristen Bell). Meester believes Serena, who has been a chatter target herself, “was the only person who could have convinced Blair to stay. Blair has a lot of insecurities, so all she needs to hear from Serena is, ‘You’re a Waldorf. You’re better than this.’ ”
Blair’s pregnancy-test crisis was, Meester reasons, “pretty much your worst nightmare if you’re juggling two guys — especially if they’re best friends — and if you’re sort of this popular, pristine figure in your school and your whole world is based on your image. That could ruin you, regardless of the outcome. I think she got what was coming to her, but at the same time, you don’t want to see her fall by losing all she has.”
To portray Blair’s desperation, “I have to put myself in the place of someone going through the hallways with everybody staring and whispering about her,” Meester says. “That wasn’t my personal childhood fear, but it wouldn’t be fun. It’s really sad for Blair to be spiraling out of control, but the worst thing is her pride being hurt. She’s been completely humiliated, and in that moment, you can’t imagine how to make things better.”
Already renewed for next season, “Gossip Girl” was kept on the air by the CW throughout the recent writers’ strike. “All we wanted to do was get back to work,” Meester says. “Personally, I wanted to see what was going to happen. I was champing at the bit to see where my character and the plot were going.” One guaranteed twist is the addition of Michelle Trachtenberg (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) as a troublemaker just out of rehab.
“There’s plenty of conflict coming,” Meester vows, “but that’s what this whole show is about. It would be really funny if we did an episode that was just ‘Blair and Serena go to lunch. Nate and Chuck go to the park. Jenny goes shopping.’ That would just be hilarious.”
Developed and executive-produced by “The O.C” mentor Josh Schwartz, “Gossip Girl” is based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s popular book series. Meester read the television version’s pilot script first, then checked out the novels: “Obviously, it’s a heightened reality, but the girls who come up to us and tell us they love the show are the ones we’re portraying. That’s what matters — that they feel, ‘It’s true to our lives. We go to these schools. We approve.’ ”
With year two guaranteed, “Gossip Girl” is Meester’s longest series job to date. Her previous roles have included a young minister’s love interest on “7th Heaven,” the sister of a boy harboring a sea creature -on “Surface” and a terrorist couple’s murder victim on “24.” She also guest-starred on “Veronica Mars,” so she’s crossed paths before with Bell, the voice behind Gossip Girl.
“She does her voice-overs from who knows where, because she’s always working on a million projects,” Meester says of Bell, who stars in the new movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”
“We’ll watch the show sometimes before it’s finished, and there’s a temporary voice. When you hear the huge difference between the temp and Kristen, you realize how much she makes the show. She’s perfect for it, the exact example of what I think Cecily had in mind.”
Another major player in “Gossip Girl” is New York itself, thanks to on-location filming that uses as much of the city as possible.
“I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful that’s been,” Meester says. “So often, you’ll read a great New York script that’s actually being shot in Los Angeles or Toronto, so I was so happy when I found out they were going to shoot it here. It’s freezing sometimes, but we don’t mind. Not too much.”
